There are some 3,300,000 high school seniors in the United States. About 2/3s will attend approximately 5300 colleges and universities. Those are big numbers and that means you are competing for one of a limited number of spots. Some people use the phrase 'college admittance game'. It is not a game, but it is a competition.
You really are unique – It is just difficult to convey uniqueness through an application. But much headway can be made through essays, interviews, recommendations and video (when permissible). The key is not sounding like everyone else, it is to make a point of sounding like you!
Essays – Is there really room left to write a unique essay? We concede a new concept (sports analogy, overcoming adversity, role models, etc. are all well worn) is hard to come by. However, what you have experienced in your life - good or bad - is unique. Experience has made you who you are. That is what needs to be conveyed. What is your personal narrative??
Interviews– As we touch upon in our FAQs, interviews (when a college uses them) can be a powerful differentiator. Were you able to relay why you, your experiences and your goals in life specifically align with a particular college? You can move the needle if you are prepared.
Athletics – While only a small fraction of high schools athletes go on to play in college, sports can open the door. Where there is a specific need we work with sport specific college consultants you may already have engaged.
